XML sitemap checker

Enter your domain or sitemap URL; we’ll find the sitemap via robots.txt, read all child files and list the issues Google would flag.

You can enter your domain or the sitemap URL directly (e.g. yoursite.com/sitemap.xml).

What makes a good sitemap?

The check picks 12 evenly spaced sample URLs from the sitemap and also tests their status codes.

  • Should only contain indexable, canonical URLs that return 200
  • Up to 50,000 URLs and 50 MB per file; large sites should use a sitemap index
  • lastmod should show the real update date; the same date on every URL undermines trust
  • Should be declared with a Sitemap line in robots.txt and submitted to Search Console

Frequently asked questions

Will Google find my site without a sitemap?
It will if your internal links are well structured, but a sitemap helps new and updated pages get discovered faster. This matters especially for large and new sites.
Which pages shouldn’t be in the sitemap?
Redirecting pages, pages returning 404, noindexed pages, pages with a canonical pointing to another URL, and parameterized duplicates shouldn’t be in the sitemap.
Why does lastmod matter?
If Google trusts your lastmod dates, it recrawls changed pages faster. Having the same date on every URL causes this signal to be ignored.
