SERP preview & meta tag checker

Type your title and description or pull them from a page URL; instantly see where Google will cut them off based on pixel width.

How do you write a good title and description?

Google shortens long titles and descriptions and sometimes shows text it picks itself. Clear text that matches the page content makes it more likely that your own text is shown.

  • The title should stay within about 580 pixels (50–60 characters); the main keyword should be near the beginning.
  • The meta description should be 120–155 characters and include the page’s promise and a call to action.
  • Every page’s title and description should be unique; duplicates make pages compete with each other.
  • Put the brand name at the end of the title; the search term should come first.

Frequently asked questions

Why measure pixels instead of characters?
Google truncates titles based on a width of about 580 pixels, not on character count. Wide letters take up more space and narrow ones less, so measuring in pixels is more accurate.
Why is Google changing my meta description?
If the description isn’t relevant enough to the search, Google may pick another part of the page instead. Descriptions that answer the query and accurately summarize the page are shown as written more often.
Are the date and site name shown too?
The preview shows the site name, the URL path and, optionally, the publish date. In the actual result, Google may change these based on the page’s structured data.
